In a surprising turn of events, the Coraline 15th Anniversary release managed to secure the fifth spot at the domestic box office with an impressive $8.63 million over the three-day weekend. With screenings on 1,603 screens, the total cume reached $11.6 million, breaking the previous record set by Fathom Events. This stop-motion animated film by Henry Selick became the distributor’s highest-grossing classic, surpassing $7 million at the box office over a four-day period. The success of Coraline was evident in its debut back in 2009, where it opened with $16.8 million and went on to gross $75.3 million domestically and $127 million globally.

Coraline is a PG-rated film based on Neil Gaiman’s popular 2002 book. It follows the story of a young girl named Coraline, voiced by Dakota Fanning, who stumbles upon a secret door in her new house. Through this door, she discovers an alternate version of her life that seems perfect at first glance. However, the parallel reality soon reveals its dark side, with her counterfeit parents, including the eerie Other Mother voiced by Teri Hatcher, attempting to keep her trapped forever. Prathyangira Cinemas’ Hindi supernatural comedy horror, Stree 2 by Amar Kaushik, saw a successful three-day weekend with $2.18 million from 666 locations. Building on the success of its predecessor, Stree (2018), the film capitalized on an urban legend out of Bangalore involving a malevolent witch preying on unsuspecting men. Additionally, Roadside Attractions’ My Penguin Friend made a strong debut with over $1 million. This PG-rated family comedy, inspired by a true story, showcases the bond between a lost penguin and the fisherman who saved it from an oil spill.

Amidst the variety of new releases and holdovers, films like DÌD and Skincare managed to find their audiences. Focus Features’ DÌD expanded into additional markets with positive ratings from both critics and audiences. IFC Films’ Skincare, starring Elizabeth Banks, opened to a promising start despite potential reporting discrepancies. Republic Pictures’ Rob Peace and A24’s Sing Sing also garnered attention with their performances at the box office. Notably, CatVideoFest 2024 continued to attract audiences, reaching a significant milestone in terms of revenue.
