The Rise and Fall of Broadway Box Office

Broadway’s box office experienced a slight dip in the second full week of August, with a decrease of about 9% compared to the previous week. The total gross for the week ending August 18 was $28,132,262. This decrease can be attributed to the absence of Illinoise from the chart, which had grossed a significant amount in its final week. However, despite the drop in box office revenue, the attendance figure for the week was actually 9% higher than the same week last season.

Of the 25 productions on the roster, almost all reported a decline in box office earnings. However, there were a few exceptions that stood out. Productions such as Moulin Rouge!, Oh, Mary!, Cabaret, Suffs, and The Wiz experienced an increase in ticket sales. Notably, The Wiz saw the biggest jump in receipts, closing its limited run with a significant increase in revenue.

Throughout the week, several shows managed to sell out, including Hadestown, Oh, Mary!, Once Upon a Time Mattress, Stereophonic, The Outsiders, and The Wiz. This indicates a strong demand for these productions among theatergoers. Despite some shows experiencing a decline in attendance, the overall total attendance for the week’s lineup was 225,384, down 7% from the previous week but up 6% year-over-year. Approximately 92% of all available seats were filled.

As of the 13th week of the 2024-25 season, Broadway has grossed $428,075,221, representing a 7% increase over the previous year. Total attendance has also seen a modest increase of about 4%. These figures, provided by The Broadway League, showcase the overall health and resilience of Broadway’s financial performance.

While Broadway experienced a temporary setback in box office revenue during the second week of August, the season as a whole continues to show positive growth and momentum. With several high-performing shows and strong audience demand, the future looks promising for Broadway’s continued success in the coming months.
